"But I'm not thankful for you guys."

Tonight Nathan told Rebekah her bedtime Bible story as usual, tonight being the story of Ahab. He applied it to our 3-year-old by saying that we should be thankful for the things we have instead of selfishly wanting what others have. So for prayer time, Nathan asked Rebekah to think of a few things to thank God for instead of praying for two or three requests as she usually does. Rebekah had just learned Ecclestiastes 3:11 that speaks of how God made everything beautiful, so we suggested that she could thank God for His Creation. She said, "I'm not thankful for that. I'm thankful only for myself." Nathan asked her if she liked her toys, and of course the answer to that was "yes." Nathan told her that she could thank God for her toys, herself, Mommy, Daddy, and Daniel. Rebekah prayed and thanked God for her toys and for herself. Nathan said, "Now thank God for Mommy, Daddy, and Daniel." Rebekah replied tearfully, "But I'm not thankful for you guys." Nathan said, "Well, thanking God for things will help you to become thankful." She prayed and thanked God for us, although tearfully, as though it were a great trial to thank God for her family!
Although the situation was (and is) humorous, Rebekah's self-centeredness reminds us not only of how much work we have to do in training her, but also of the human sin nature and our own selfishness before God. We covet your prayers as we seek to wisely raise the two small charges the Lord has entrusted to us.

Getting a peak into our children's sinful souls hits a little too close to home for me sometimes. What a responsibility we have as we get a peak into what's inside. We definitely need wisdom from God in our responses to the daily activities and conversations of each day.

And that conversation could have so been my Kayla. Even down to the tears.
