Picnic in the Yard

Today after school we decided to have our lunch outside in our little yard. It was something fun and different. The highlight hands down was watching the multitude of ants come for crumbs and leftovers. The kids especially loved it as we had just read the book One Hundred Hungry Ants earlier in the day. Daniel thought we shouldn't feed the ants, but Rebekah said we should share with them and kept dropping little bits of bread or apple where she thought they would find them. Hannah just didn't want them on her or her plate. It was rather interesting watching the ants attempt to carry off Rebekah's "gifts." At one point the kids all gathered round to watch four ants working together to carry away some bread. Hannah didn't want her last couple of chips, so Rebekah put them on a plate for the ants. We sat there watching the ants crawl all over an enormous (to them) chip, trying to figure out how to carry it away, and then finally bite off a piece and head back to the anthill. Just before we went inside, Hannah took the chips and set them on top of the anthill, "so the ants wouldn't have to carry them."

Concentrating hard on those ants

enjoying the simple pleasures!
